a new snack pack size

I didn’t know the Hubs was a shopper when we met in Alaska. Who would? He was living on and renovating an old wooden boat and working for boat parts.

Now that we’re boring settled, married with kid, homeowners, you can’t miss it. If you ask for a box of cereal, he comes back with 5. If you tell him a certain sugar cube is good, he brings home enough sugar cubes for high tea at Windsor Palace.

Normally, I bitch and moan about wasted food, storage space, and money and roll my eyes WAY back politely tell him to only get one next time.

But I said nothing but “yay!” when I asked for a couple handfuls and he showed up with this 5lb. bag:

What is that?

At our local market, these, my friend, are called “mango cheeks.” A name I’m not really comfortable with since it conjures up a Mr. Mangohead with eyes, a nose, and two scooped out spots that used to be its cheeks.

(Granted, the dried fruit place at Pike Place Market has the best ones, but these are more convenient for us. Especially since they’re here, in the kitchen, at this moment.)

Forget the name, they are dried mango, plain and simple, no sugar added. And they ROCK.

Who needs caviar when there is this stuff?

I had NO idea they’d sell an entire bag, but that’s the Hubs for ya. Thanks, Hubs.

I have to go eat more mango now. Bye!

Do you have a favorite snack you’d eat by the TON?

  • AAHHH! Where is this market?! I luuuurv mangos! But the dried packages that mega-marts sell are covered in sugar and I hate that! I would love these…
I usually snack like crazy on almond and pumpkin seeds and granola bars (the really good organic kind) but this last Christmas my gramma made me a ranch flavored trail mix with pretzels, nuts and Cheerios…ohmigawd. I can’t ask her for the recipe or my butt will swell to twice it’s current size…and that would just be tragic.

  • I love mangoes so much. I lived on them as a kid and the dried ones I’ve found (the ones from the Philippines) are usually too sickly sweet. I’ll have to check Pike’s Place.

  • Okay, we shop at the same market and I’ve never seen mango cheeks. Where are they?

    Such a weird name.

  • I’m SO glad to find other mango-lovers!

Shelly, check the bulk section at T&C. Central Market has them, too, in their bulk section but I don’t think theirs are, on average, as fresh (maybe cuz we don’t live over there, buying them constantly…).

  • Penelope and I LOVE dried mango! But I must start calling them mango checks. lol

  • That looks yummy! I like cake.

  • “…Especially since they’re here, in the kitchen, at this moment.” Ah, reason enough for me. What could eat a ton of? Cheese curls. Yellow or white cheddar. A ton. I hate myself in the morning, but I do it anyway.

I thought at first the bag was full of some kind of sweet potato chips. Giant radioactive ones, but still.

  • Hi Kathy! Welcome! Those would be giant sweet potato chips! I should have put my hand or something in the shot so you could know just how big these are. Big on taste, too, but unlike chips, small on guilt. You should keep some in your drawer… :)

  • Hey, I saw these at our farmer’s market this weekend and wondered if they tasted as good as they look? Now I know the answer!!
