[FYI, Mommyblogging rule 102: you must blog about your child's birthday parties.]
We had a birthday party last weekend, the big 6. Kid wanted it at the bowling alley, and since we could have pitchers of beer there her wish is our command, that’s what we did.
Nothing unusual about that.
Bowling alley provided balls, pins, lanes, lunch, and I made the cake.
Nothing unusual about that.
I left the cake-making to the last minute (also, not unusual), and freaked about not finding bowling pin-shaped candles (freaking out, not unusual) in my zip code, or our neighboring zip codes in Kitsap County, including a certain party store whose name rhymes with Hearty Pity.
Lucky for us, my brother-in-law was in town and he saved the day. How, you ask? Did he bring candles with him?
Oh no, my friend.
Why bring candles with you when you can make bowling pin-shaped candles on a lathe?
Duh.
See?

He started with a regular white candle.

Made a plastic template to scrape away at the spinning candle, and voila!

A perfect little pair. Two more pairs to go!

Isn’t he the cutest little thing?
These Alaskan men are so resourceful!
Here’s the cake:

And a good time was had by all.
[Update: I am reminded that the hubs was out of town that day, or else I'm sure he'd done the same excellent job...]

Wow, they look great! You put my cake decorating skills to shame. My kids are lucky if the frosting doesn’t have big chunks of cake stuck in it.

Amazing cake!
And your bro-in-law is the coolest guy on the island. Way to think outside of the box! I wouldn’t have ever thought to use a lathe on candles. He’s a true man.
Too bad he can’t lathe a few inches off my thighs . . .

Absolutely fantastic!! The decorations get more complex each year. Somebody may want to hire you to do cakes for special events. Love the pins; I have no doubt that the hubs could do them equally as well, but it was nice to have another similar DNA available!
That cake is awesome! And great idea on the candles… I’m going to have to keep that little trick in my repertoire

No doubt about it, that’s being resourceful and a great looking cake to be sure.
