on the nose picker
As a parent, you are continually required to think fast and react in some kind of grown-up-ish way. Yet, just when you think you have figured out the best, quick solution, your kid undermines all your confidence. Again.
We had the following incident the other day:
It’s bedtime. I’m trying to read one of those stupid fairy books which should provide me and all other aspiring authors great hope in getting published some day since they made five bazillion series of that drivel-y stuff, and the Kid while lying in bed cannot keep her finger out of her nose. Both fingers, to be exact. Simultaneously.
It was like there was a piece of taffy up there that she wanted.
I have an indiscriminate nose picker for a child. I’m not proud. But that’s where we are.
So she picks and listens. Listens and picks. Finally, after all the stop-that’s and quit-picking-your-nose’s, I grabbed the closest stuffed animal and said, hold this! With both hands! And don’t stop!
Good idea, right? I was pretty proud of myself right up until I realized the animal I gave her was this:

a unicorn.
Which the Kid proceeded to use as you might suspect.

Kid: 1

Too bad you didn’t have a stuffed bull – she could’ve done both sides at once.
Here’s my cure for nose pickin’: put Band-aids on her fingertips. It just doesn’t feel right to them, so they stop. Worked for my little gold diggers.

ROFLMAO! That’s fabulous! No matter how hard you try they will thwart your every move!
I never figured I needed to stop my kiddo for digging deep in those nasal canals. Peer pressure is a wonderful thing! The first time another little kid said something to her about picking her boogers in kindergarten the gold digging ceased, permanently.

Ooooo, band-aids. Good one, oh knowledgeable one! You DO have teenagers, don’t you? (or almost?) You’re so smart!

Most excellent and creative use of a horn. Your kid is smart.

At least she hadn’t been mining, um, down in panty-land.
‘Cause then the whole unicorn thing would have gone to a place you couldn’t blog about so easily.
You kill me, btw.

My son earned his final belt in Karate last night (for his age group) and I recorded it to put on my blog/Facebook. When I got home to post it I noticed that out of about 60 seconds of recording he is picking his nose in about 40.
What really amazes me is I didn’t even notice while filming!!!!

Love this! The thing about the fairy books cracked me up. I also am an aspiring author and am continuously dumbfounded by some of the books I’ve seen/read/put back on the shelf shaking my head. Read Candice Bushnell’s “Trading Up” sometime. Ugh. Once, a random commenter on my blog told me to just keep writing because a professor once told him “Most of the stuff on shelves is crap anyway.” I wasn’t sure if that was a diss or a compliment or encouragement or what. Thanks for the advice, dude…I guess.

Kathleen, toooo smart! we’re worried for the teenage years….
Jocelyn, thanks! And now that you mention it, she does that, too! But slightly more discretely…
Jeff, it’s funny how we just get used to seeing it, isn’t?!
Kerrie, I’m not sure if I am inspired by that either! He probably meant it as a compliment, yeah…..

I have to say, I can not agree with you in 100%, but that’s just my opinion, which indeed could be very wrong.
p.s. You have a very good template for your blog. Where did you find it?
