So, it’s been about 24 hours since John Edwards “confessed his sins” on tv, and I just wonder, except for the salaciousness of it all, does anyone really care about this affair?
What is important about it? If he runs for public office again, then maybe? In the interview (I read the transcript), he said he didn’t know that politics was how he wanted to spend his life. That may be good at this point.
Of course, maybe it’s BS. Maybe he had the affair first, then hired her to film the documentary footage as a cover, and did father the child. And paid her to keep quiet and not demand a paternity test. And the self-professed father is being paid off, too. The father’s name on the birth certificate IS blank. Maybe Elizabeth Edwards prefers it all this way, too?
To me, the lowest would be not taking responsibility for the child. If that were his child. Maybe I’m slow on numbers….if the child is six months old, and the affair ended 18 months ago, that’s pretty close. But not close enough, like in horseshoes?
Assuming all he said was true, what does any of it matter? If he and his wife have dealt with it, and now have bigger issues, like her battle with cancer, then why should any of us care? Really, enlighten me.
Politicians and womanizing seem to go hand in hand, or hand in pants. This is not new. My mom suspects other women may be coming forward next (she’s even more cynical than I). I’m at least glad it was a woman over 40. Kudos, John. And not some 19 year old girl, all ga-ga about a powerful man.
My friend from France said “Oh, we don’t care about such things. Just do your job well.” Why don’t we think like that?
Is it just more fun to gossip and speculate (and blog)? Do you care?

I don’t, no.

I watched the interview with Bob Woodruff, and I do care. I care because the way he is handling it and the way he comes across says a lot about his character. It isn’t he act itself, politicians (heck, people for that matter) don’t always make good choices, but it is how they conduct themselves after that make all the difference in the world.
I think Edwards has dug himself a monumental hole at this point and I don’t think he’ll be getting out of it anytime soon. Short of a miracle.
I wrote about it too, check it out. Also, I think we’re conditioned to care more than we should because the coverage is rammed down our throats whether we like it or not. Sad, but true.

Part of me cares because hey. This guy wanted the nation to trust him. And he’s been putting on this front of being the family man and supporting his oh-so sick wife.
But then again, look at Bill Clinton. That guy was the biggest pimp! But he was also a great leader (at least I think so).
I haven’t heard all that much about it. I’m too busy watching the Olympics!

If it came down to it and he had the job – what I would be concerned about would be how he was doing his job. Personally, it bothered me because I supported him and I like his wife so much – but she has said that he’s come clean with her, that they’ve worked on their marriage and she still believes in him, so who am I to dispute that?
What I don’t like is the fact that so much can be mined from this story for the media to blather on and on about – the baby question, the payoff questions – instead of the real problems out there to discuss.
Diesel–yeah, me not so much either.
Carrie–I totally agree about how the issue is how he handles the “mistake” once it’s out; so far, not so great.
Dumblond–I wonder if the family man image wasn’t so upfront in the campaign, would we care as much? Lots of sh*t can happen in a 30 yr marriage. If a candidate has a family, the PR machine is gonna focus on it in a campaign now. After BJ’s in the White House, it became an “issue” the voters want to know about, I guess.
Tracy–all that other stuff seems like all the media hype (unless it turns out true!) of trying to find story angles to keep reporting on, to sell papers. Yes, we could at least switch over to the Olympics now, people!
I really don’t care about politics much at all. Once in awhile a story will catch my eye and I’ll pay a little bit of attention to a particular line of events, but overall I ignore the whole mess.
This is one story that just does not interest me. A Politician had an affair? How unheard of. Ha.

I have to agree with Carrie. To do the job and do it well you need to have the honesty. I maybe biased (I was the victim of an affair) but once the trust is violated, there is usually no fixing it. Suspicion will always raise its ugly head.

I’m mixed. It’s always a little sad, especially given his wife’s cancer. But in the grand scheme of things – does it make or break a person’s ability to lead a country? I’d ratehr have a president who has had an affair, than a president who is intent on screwing the whole country.

Your French friend seems to have the right idea … there was that whole Carla Bruni thing over there. I don’t get why the US is so *gasp!* about things non-gov’t related when it comes to their politicians.
