feathered friends — Osprey neighbors

We went to Battle Point Park here on Bainbridge Island and saw this guy soaring around. Then he landed.
On this nest atop a water tower. Stretched his wings while three occupants woke up.
Then they had quality family time.
Osprey average three babies that fledge after 8 weeks. I think they’re getting close. Their wingspan stretches five feet across. Dat big!
I say “he” but it could be “she.” Both feed fish to the chicks until they fly.
I was hoping they’d eat some of the rabbits taking over the park. Oh well.
Anyone know anything else interesting about osprey? ‘Cuz that’s all I got!

Nope – no ospreys here. But cool photos. We’ve got lots of red-tailed hawks and a few bald eagles, though.

I used to find out the most obscure trivia about all sorts of animals to share with my youngest brother and sister so here’s a little nugget for you … osprey can actually close their nostrils when they go into the water to get a fish. How that works on a birdy beak I’d like to find out.

citizen, I had thought it was an eagle’s nest, so I was excited to see the occupants up close.

Great shots. I took some of ospreys at the family reunion this past weekend, haven’t downloaded any yet but I doubt mine will be this good.

Love the photos. Thanks for sharing them. My daughter is a nature nut. Here are a few of her fun facts: the females are larger and the eggs do not hatch at the same time.
