Learn-A-Word Wednesday: woebegone \WOE-bee-gon\

adjective:
1. Beset or overwhelmed with woe; immersed in grief or sorrow; woeful.
2. Being in a sorry condition; dismal-looking; dilapidated; run-down.

Socrates, condemned to death by the people of Athens, prepares to drink a cup of hemlock, surrounded by woebegone friends.
– Alain De Botton, The Consolations of Philosophy

Woebegone is from Middle English wo begon, from wo (from Old English wa, used to express grief) + begon, past participle of begon, “to go about, to beset,” from Old English began, bigan, from bi-, “around, about” + gan, “to go.”

This word reminds me of this book which I have not read. From the title, sounds depressing. I know, it’s a radio show! Whatever.

I’m grumpy today and feeling woebegone because….well, a variety of things. Here’s one thing:

img_4394-1.jpg My BABY lost her first tooth. I was not prepared for my emotional reaction.

I almost cried. WTH? A tooth. A teeny weeny baby tooth. That, IMO, has no business being out of that flappin’ little mouth. Truly, a lazy tooth shirking its responsibilities. I am sure it had many more months, maybe years, of chewing that it was lined up for.

And THIS, two weeks before she goes off to full day kindergarten? What I am going to be like on THAT DAY?

You don’t want to know. I don’t want to know.

All I feel like doing now is going around woeing…sighsighsigh.

Are you having woebegone days?

  • Wow! A lost tooth already? She’s a lucky one.

All of my kids made it clear through Kindergarten without even the slightest wiggle in their teeth. And let me tell you - it was devastating!

So good for Kid! She can walk proudly into that big K classroom and condescendingly smirk at all those 5-6 year old losers who still have all their baby teeth. :-)

  • She lost a tooth and you’re losing your grip on reality. Hang in there, she has a lot more teeth to go and a lot more first days of school. Take it from a guy who’s been there a few times. Enjoy the moments…

  • Brooke, I hadn’t thought about that angle. Now she’s got bragging rights. Pretty good for one of the younger ones of the class.

Mike, I AM losing my grip. WTH! Maybe it’s just that first tooth that’s the hardest?

  • Mine didn’t lose hers until 1st grade and she was QUITE devastated that everyone else had gaps in their mouths.

If losing the baby teeth has you losing it…wait until she hits puberty, gets even more of an attitude, suddenly knows EVERYTHING and starts dating. It’s a whole new ballgame. *sigh*

  • LOL. Thanks for the chuckle. It reminded me of how I lost my baby teeth. Yes teeth. I was never a morning person, our house was cold and drafty so I would play a game of tug of war where my mom would yank the blanket off and I would be forced to rise and get ready for school. One morning, I was determined to stay in my cocoon of comfort. So when she came in to tug…I tugged back with all the strength a five year old could muster. I held on with my feet, hands, legs…and yes…teeth. One quick jerk of the blanket and several of my baby teeth went flying across the room and my mouth was brimming with blood. LOL Talk about trauma.
Moral of the story, I got to stay home which forever cemented my status as a sleeper-inner.

So things could be worse. ( :

  • I love your word of the week feature!

    I haven’t been feeling woebegone… but harried.

    Ack!

  • I stood in the driveway and cried when Ann left for kindergarten and college (both years). It absolutely sucks that when you do your job well they don’t need you anymore. And remind you of it frequently….

  • wow! I can’t believe she lost a tooth already! How did the day off to kindergarten go?
