of birds and berries

Just wanted to show you guys that the Swainson’s thrushes definitely have feathers and that one on the left was looking at me, eyes wide open! (his little black eye is partially behind a twig)

Hey, lady, no nest shots!

I can’t imagine them flying off in a day or two, but that’s what I calculate. *sniff*

Today we picked strawberries ($8 for half a flat) in the HOT sun. If you’re on or near the island, check out the Manzanita Farm. They’re open this week and weekend, they said, from 11 to 5.

Kid said, “Mommy, I never picked strawberries BEfore! I picked blackberries and blueberries, but never strawberries…..”

Lucky Kid, I think to myself, growing up where berries grow up.

  1. When I was growing up, my mom would make me go pick strawberries with her, my grandmother, my aunt and my cousins.

    I HATED it.

I would sit in the dirt and complain and they told me that if I didn’t pick any strawberries I didn’t get to eat any later.

“Fine. Can I just have a bowl of whipped cream then?”

  2. Oh, Reese, what a drag!! So far, the Kid’s been happy about picking berries. She used to cry for them when I’d walk with her in the backpack and she’d see blackberries at eye level.

BUT she did just eat the whipped cream and no berries last night…..

  3. While I love being on vacation, I really miss my garden and the berries on the island. The nice thing is that the berries are ripe here but I still miss home. Let’s try to connect when I return. We spent the last two months decluttering and preparing for this vacation. Our house kicked our booties.
