Today, Absolutely Bananas has suggested the subject of HEARTBREAK.
What first sprang to mind on this topic? Easy.
The cancellation of Men in Trees (I can’t even link to a show page because abc.com acts like it never existed).
Yes, it was Northern Exposure remade (with a female lead, yay! although it was nutjob Anne Heche, boo!). But it was cute, and it kinda sorta actually captured some reality of living in southeast Alaska (which I did for almost seven years). And they had a show blog, Blogs in Trees, but that too is GONE. SI-A-NARA, BABEEEE.
Delayed by the Writers’ Guild strike, like many others, the show just never regained its footing.
And, as misery loves company, I am happy to report that this was a heartbreak I shared. Yes, the hubs (a true Alaskan) actually watched a show WITH me! Normally, I watch chick shows and he walks out. Or he finds an old Steven Segal movie on TBS, and I walk out.
We finally had a show to share. Then, they cancel it.
I hoped the reports were wrong. I prayed to the cancellation gods to take someone else. Take Ugly Betty. (I never got that show.) But no, when is the interwebs ever wrong?
And as sure as Britney’s not getting custody, one day, POOF. Gone.
I’m looking for a cheap, easy fill-in rebound kinds of shows. ABC, are you listening? Samantha Who better not become Samantha Where. I’m too fragile to suffer another loss.

I used to watch a show on Showtime called Dead Like Me. They canceled it and I just couldn’t figure out WHY… it was AMAZING and I LOVED it and it made me cry. So, I feel your pain.

I’m with you on the Men In Trees. Although I was getting annoyed at how they took all of Annie’s sweetness away by the end. Maybe it’s better this way.
I somehow always fall in love with the soon-to-be cancelled shows. Stupid tv.

Well, I don’t know about tears exactly, but my husband and I got through all however many seasons there were of Pretender, and were all ready to watch the movies they made which supposedly tie up a bunch of loose ends (I mean, seriously, at the end of the series the main characters are on an exploding subway train) and I’m sure you can imagine our surprise when we discovered that Netflix does not STOCK the Pretender movies. Sigh.

I love this take on heartbreak. I can’t say I cried any tears over the loss of a show but that might not last long since the finale of The Shield is this fall.
It amazes me how quick they are to cancel these days. Most shows hardly get a chance anymore.

I just read in EW that there will be a connection between Men in Trees and Samantha Who next season.

When HBO declined to do a fourth season of Deadwood, my wife and I were both reasonably cheesed.
I don’t know what it says about us that we watched that show together, but there you go.

Two shows come to my mind immediately:
Firefly, a Josh Whedon Space-cowboy adventure show (13 episodes) and
Journey Man, a time travelling show that just got going good (13 episodes).
Maybe I should only watch shows when they get to number 14.

Hey Rog, at least your shows actually showed all thirteen episodes; my favorite - Keen Eddie (on FOX)- was cancelled before they showed all thirteen. Talk about a cliffhanger. I mean come on, how could you even think of canceling a show starting Mark Valley.
The other show cancelled that I didn’t understand was HBO’s Carnivàle. Fabulous cinematography.

I felt that way when the cut Studio 60 right as it was starting to get interesting. And when Joel left Northern Exposure, and when Aaron Sorkin left the West Wing, and when Friends closed up shop…I could go on and one. Probably because I watch entirely too much TV.

I don’t watch much TV these days, and almost never watch network TV. Things just haven’t been the same since Seinfeld went off the air. That was ten years ago. Oh, god, someone hold me!

Sometimes I don’t discover a show until it is already gone and I see a collection of episodes on DVD. Like Freaks and Geeks - good show. But I rarely feel all that sad about one ending.

I can totally relate. Our favorite family show, Avatar, just ran the final episode. We were so heart broken that we taped it and watched it several days in a row. Also, thanks for visiting my blog.

I don’t watch too much TV anymore either. You may be shocked to know that we don’t even HAVE cable!
That said… I was upset when the writer’s strike interrupted the TV show Chuck. It isn’t the best show ever, but the nerd in me liked it for some reason. It is coming back though! Hooray!

We are watching Weeds and it is enjoyable. Nothing like the HBO shows though.

What the h— is going on with the firehouse-centered “Rescue Me” recently? Such a fast moving, cover all subjects type series. It looked like it was returning a few weeks ago when low & behold — it was on for 6 minutes!! The next week — 5 min., etc. Then the announcement said it would have the long run in 2009…. Do we really believe that there’s going to be a return for certain. Of course not. Stay tuned….
