Learn-A-Word Wednesday: cavil \KAV-uhl\

intransitive verb:

1. To raise trivial or frivolous objections; to find fault without good reason.
2. To raise trivial objections to.
3. A trivial or frivolous objection.

Cavil comes from Latin cavillari, “to jeer, to quibble,” from cavilla, “scoffing.”

This might be me cavilling….

Our little island is known for a few things, greenery in the form of trees and bills, but lots of good restaurants….not so much. We’re even on an island and have NO actual seafood place.

So I should have expected this. I was tired, he had been working, and we ordered take-out last night. Pizza and chopped salad.

The pizza was OK. Kinda cold and stiff. Not great, but not BAD, per se.

The salad, however, was NOT CHOPPED. WHY put a salad on the menu with the name “chopped salad” and then have pieces of lettuce big enough for making wraps? Big enough to cover my Kid’s head?!

We wondered if it was a typo, and they meant to say “unchopped salad.”

People, chop the frickin’ lettuce. Is this so hard?

And what, besides lettuce was included in the salad, you ask. Wellllll, not much. A few walnuts and a few small, flat squares of cheese and salami. That’s it. No other veggies, no diced items of any kind. For $7, wouldn’t you expect a little more for a chopped salad? I’m picturing olives, salami, cheese, peppers, maybe even, oh gosh, celery or cucumbers or sumthang crazy like that.

At this rate, I’ll be COOKING dinner every night when the alternative is just so SAD. We’ll have taco Monday, taco Tuesday, taco Thursday with a day of leftover tacos tossed in.

Which, finally, brings me to the ongoing debate of this household: tip or not tip for take-out??

If you know me, you know I’m cheap, so guess where I come out on it? How about you?

Do you tip or not tip?

  • This is NOT cavilling. It is an honest-to-goodness, full-on legitimate bitch. Where is the freaking seafood on this island?? We LOVE to eat out, and we LOVE to eat seafood - but it’s such a pain in the arse to have to take the boat over to Seattle every time I’m craving some halibut that I don’t have to cook myself. Grrrrr. . . .

And I am most definitely a NON-tipper for take-out. In fact, before you asked the question, I’d never even considered that anyone would tip for take-out. Isn’t a tip given in appreciation for extra service? If I have to drive my car to their restaurant, find parking, go in and wait in line at the counter, then drive back home to serve the food and clean up the mess - I’m the one who deserves the tip.

  • As distinct from delivery, which definitely requires a tip, right?

I don’t tip for take-out. There is no server of anykind. Tipping, in my opinion, is for the waitperson, the person who busses the table, the host if there is one. The peple who do something to deliver your meal to you and clean up afterwards. I believe cooks get a more reasonable hourly rate and don’t rely on tips.

  • Here is my contribution: “You were cavilling with me when you sided with the pump that ‘ginormous’ is a word.”

p.s. holy crap - when did that happen??????

  • sorry- in my being thrown for a loop about the “ginormous’ thing, I forgot to answer your question. NO tip for take-out. That’s like tipping the grocery cashier.

Also, in my research, I discovered that 1) it became a word in 2007 and 2) the spell-checker on this comment box is red-underlining it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Speaking of chopped salad, Daughter #2 and I were at T&C a little while ago and they’re dishing up cups of chopped salad. My kid gobbled hers up and it was so yummy I’m going to make it as part of dinner tonight. Salami, ham, garbanzo beans, provolone, olives, pepperoncini, fresh basil, parsley, romaine….good stuff.

  • While on the subject of no choices for the island folks who like to eat out - what a bout a dinner? When I want to get breakfast on Saturday morning where do I go? Okay once in a while the nuts and twigs stuff at Streamliner is good, or the we are trying too hard stuff at the Red Star rail car place can do in a pinch, but where is the bacon and eggs with extra crispy hashbrowns and a side stack with butter and warm syrup when you really need it? Where do you go for that? 2 am or 10 am; either way its no where to be found on our little island.

  • Brooke, really this whole thing was a tribute to you! I know you want SEAFOOD!! :)

Citizen, you make me feel so rational when I was just starting loathing because the hubs tips!

Sue, I just couldn’t resist on that ginormous thing. Only because Brooke once told me it’s a legitimate word now! :)

Shelly, did they have the recipe available?? I need it and so does Treehouse!

Sheri, try Salmon Canyon Cafe!! Decent breakfasts and healthy portions! Altho I’m not sure if they have actual hash browns. And Big Star is now something else, so maybe they’ve got a grip on breakfasts? Anyone know?

  • Yup, the recipe was being handed out. It was at the little stand near the seafood counter. You can buy some fish at the same time to cook tonight!
