I’ve seen them here before and looked them up. Band-tailed pigeon, the book said. Always show up in twos. Isn’t that sweet?
For birders out there, help me out here–are pigeons and doves the same?

I think they are in the same family, (same genus?) but have their own subcategories. So, they aren’t interchangeable terms but very closely related. I think.

Good question, Wendy. We had these birds in our gravel driveway “eating” gravel for years. We never gave much thought to them. But, we could frequently hear their mourning cooing call.
Hunters shoot only “doves” in Texas, and one never hears about hunting “pigeons.” I learned that basically, a dove is a smaller pigeon and there are hundreds of dove species.
