Look, up in the sky, it’s a bird!
Okay, it’s not actually up in the sky, but it is a bird.
Just what is going on around here, I’d like to know. Every day I sit on the couch (gotta get my weight up for winter, as DH says for himself) and hear CLUNK! at the sliding glass door.
CLUNK! at the windows across the room.
CLUNK! CLUNK! CLUNK!
Birds seem to have lost all their bird brains and are now flinging themselves into our windows. Every. Day.
And I’m sad to report not all of them live to chirp the tale.
They are the littler ones, the sparrows usually. Not the giant Pileated Woodpecker (now that would be a THUD!), or the Northern Flicker, or the cute little Downy Woodpeckers.
Occasionally, the lovely chickadees. ![]()
As far as I can tell, never the nuthatches (my favorites, they eat upside down if necessary; you gotta respect that).
Is it the angle of light these days? A sudden attack by other birds? Has our dumb pooch, LTK, formulated some trap to lure them into the windows?
I never see it coming. I just hear it and see the fallout. The body count continues.
One poor feathered soul sat stunned for awhile yesterday as I phoned my bird-saving friend about aviary first aid (press 20 times fast, breath twice….).
She panted (the bird, not my friend), in a seemingly broken position, but slowly righted herself. When I saw LTK’s tail wiggling minutes later, I assumed the bird moved more. She did. She disappeared. I don’t know for sure, but I hope she took flight.
And I hope she learned her lesson about those evil, sneaky glass obstacles out in the world. We should all be so lucky to have such a short recovery time for our personal crashes.

I hate it when this starts happening. One theory I’ve heard is they get “drunk” on the fermenting berries they eat this time of year. We have all those red holly berries that I see them eating. I wonder if thats part of the problem…..

It’s always startling to hear them THUNK! into the window.
I don’t have to worry about body count though, the cat takes care of the casualities.
