Learn-A-Word Wednesday: stentorian \sten-TOR-ee-uhn\

adjective:
Extremely loud.

Around his family, Sergeant Charles Mingus Sr. was easily angered and often violent and closemouthed the rest of the time, except when he gave orders in a stentorian voice that carried the assumption of command.
– Gene Santoro, Myself When I Am Real

Stentorian comes from Stentor, a Greek herald in the Trojan War. According to Homer’s Iliad, his voice was as loud as that of fifty men combined.

When I first read this word-of-the-day, I skimmed quickly to the root origin information looking for some link to the word “preschooler.” Sure, Stentor was loud, but loud as that of fifty preschoolers combined??

Now, that’s loud.

Note: You may have noticed I’m making this a weekly event, learning new words. Maybe the discipline will be good for me…but when has discipline ever paid off?

And you can participate, too! Let’s face it. There are hundreds, maybe thousands, of words out there, just in English alone. I can’t be responsible for all of them. If you discover an interesting word, relevant to you in some way, please join me!

Then we can write way better and use more cool lingo on our sites and in our lives. Awesome, huh?
