back in the stone ages….
We had a major castatrophe here.
A leak developed in the Insta-Hot tank under our sink. Laugh if you will, but this is IMPORTANT. After the washing machine, and the dishwasher, and the TIVO, and, well, that’s about it (and not in that particular order), Instant Hot Water is crucial to my happiness and comfort in my old age.
The old machine (”old” = five years!) expired when DH was out of town, natch. And it didn’t go out in a blast. Oh no, it silently began to drip, drip, drip, turning the under-the-sink area into an undersea area, or more accurately, a swampland with giant mossy trees of cleaning supply bottles.
Since then, we’ve been launched back into the Stone Ages, resorting to boiling water in a kettle on the stove. And waiting, waiting, waiting. Imagine the humiliation. Next, we’ll be chopping down trees to build a fire for cooking and digging up clay to shape a mug.
Sure, I could use that pre-boiling time to clean my sink, wipe down counters, empty the dishwasher (which could also double as good exercise, I suppose), or simply clear my mind and chant “ooooohhhhhmmm.”
Nah.
Usually, you could find me staring at the stove, tapping my fingers, and eventually grabbing the kettle before the whistle blows.
Now, my hero hath arrived (oh, and DH is back in town, too, to install it):

And we are launched forward into modern leisure living once again. Ahhhhhh.

At least you had a tea kettle. I don’t even have one of those since the hard water I have crummed it up permanently.
Congrats on the new insta-hot!

Well, I had almost given away my tea kettle! Whew! That was a close one. Now I see it as an emergency kit. Just in case. Our water is not great, either, but my hubs installed a superduper water filter (two levels actually) so now it tastes much better and is probably more filtered than a lot of bottled water.

Oh, God! How did you survive? How did you make it for so long without instant hot water? Oh, I’m terribly, terribly sorry I wasn’t there to help your family through this crisis.
Wait a second … there are such things as instant hot water dispensers? I mean, that don’t come from Culligan?

I feel your pain. We’ve gone through a time of everything breaking one after another. Things one must have. Van, washing machine, car, fridge, dryer, furnace, van again, other car, new car.

We save 1000 gallons a month by having installed a similar system under our kitchen sink. We used to have to wait 2-3 minutes for the hot water to reach the spigot from our hot water heater. Our calculations show that the water savings are greater than the cost to power the heater - yay!

DD, it is unfortunate you and your handyman skills are SO far away from us in our time of need…..
Q, I totally forgot about The Ride! It is 10 years old but it still works!
Holly, who knew I could be conserving and spoiling myself! Finally. Thank you. I feel much better.
