Health Tip: Exercise Doing Everyday Chores

This just in on the wire — Easy ways to get more exercise by doing chores the hard way.

(HealthDay News) - Getting needed exercise can be as simple as performing a few household chores regularly.
Here are some suggestions, courtesy of HealthGuidance.org:

* Gardening — Water plants with a watering can instead of a hose, and alternate carrying the can on each arm.
* Sweeping — Clean not just your driveway, but offer to do your neighbors’, as well as the sidewalks.
* Washing your car — Use a bucket that you have to carry, not a hose.
* Cleaning and re-arranging — Thoroughly clean out rooms in your home, carefully moving objects to clean every area.

Here are a few more ideas from me:
–Washing your clothes — use a rock by a river two miles from your home; use a hollowed-out pumpkin to carry your clothes.
–Mopping your kitchen floor — scrub with an old eyebrow brush; first, make soap using lye; offer to do your neighbor’s floors.
–Washing your windows — fill balloons with soapy (see above) water; carry individually outside and throw at window; rinse with tablespoons of water from river (see above); dry rapidly by panting on each pane; the kids love helping on this chore.

  • Chores represent utterly wasted time. Nobody ever lay on their deathbed and wished they’d scrubbed the bathroom floor tiles more often.

    Go live or something, instead.

  • Note to self: do not accept a dinner invitation to Jim’s house. If so, bring a toilet seat cover.

  • Oh, yes, Lady, I agree! However, he does have that “single guy” thing going for him, so fewer people making messes….

I am reminded of that joke the guy says to his girlfriend, “why are cleaning the tub? we’re not moving.”

  • Why scrub the tub? Just spray down after each use.

Don’t get me wrong: I wash dishes, I do light dusting, sweeping and vacuuming (I have to with my allergies), I do laundry. My house is not unhygienic by any means. But giving over whole days to cleaning, or putting aside fun things to dig at grout with a toothbrush? That’s evidence of a clinical disorder, or deep insecurities about what other people think.

  • I especially like the part about doing chores at the neighbor’s house. If you need the workout, you can wash my floors any time Wendy. Whatever you need, I’m there for you.

  • I’ll tell you what has saved me and my marriage, a house cleaner.

Now that I have no creditability in this subject I will say this, I love doing HARD work now and then.

I pick up my CO-OP bulk food items in my wheelbarrow (the store is out of my neighbors barn 4 houses down). I get a total kick out of doing stuff with no electric equipment. I love to water with a watering can or actually doing the dishes (Wendy can attest to this one!).

I’ve often thought I’d like to get a push mower. I know that is crazy though.

  • Sheri-somehow I KNEW you’d pick up on that neighbor thing!! Works both ways. We’re here for you, as well.

Oh, Dawn, listen to you! Next you’ll get a manual grain grinder for bread making…. (who’d do that when you can get an electric one like ours….!)

  • Wendy, Hey I’m just trying to be a good neighbor.

Dawn, Who do you use for housecleaning? Now that I’m working in Bellevue its starting to pile up. I tried Merry Maids without much success and would love a referral.

  • Sheri, I’m afraid it might be costly to get Dawn’s helper because she’s in Iowa now (sniff, sniff, sniff). Check out messages on Islandmoms yahoo group. You can search archives and find some people that way.
