can someone explain this card?
My friend Will asked a really good question on his site. He wanted to know what the baby graphic on this airplane safety card meant.
Ever since I saw this, I have been scratching my head. As a parent, I would hope that any safety instructions would apply universal concepts in a self-explanatory manner. I think this may miss the mark, eh? In what world is this clear? (I can see it now, plane going down, people scrambling…kid, check, life vest, check, light bulb, wait, where’s the liiiiiggggghhhhht…? CRASH!)

Then I noticed a sign on the ferry yesterday with the same light bulb, causing a light bulb moment for me.

I never noticed before, but life preservers must have some kind of attached, waterproof light, right?
So, bring a book when you are jumping overboard next time. You can read while waiting for your rescuers to arrive. I feel so much better. Nuthin’ to be skeerd ’bout! They think of everything!

When I first saw it, my first thought was maybe the baby was struck with inspiration. Then I saw someone had made that same comment on the other blog you linked to. Then I just panicked because I was out of material.

The baby has seen the light! NO, baby, don’t go into the light!

Ahhh, it makes sense now! Funny, I’ve seen that one from the ferry but never made the connection to the one I saw on the plane.

Oh, Scott, I HATE that feeling. I get it often.
DH says it’s the Star of Bethlehem……
He also said that they DO light up, water-activated. Or have a light on them, for real!! How about that? A wealth of knowledge in my own house…..well, he was in Alaska when I wrote this post, so…..

I have no idea what it means but the airline instruction designers need to stop taking drugs.

Actually as an old sailboat racer I know from experience everyone who races wears one for safety on their life vest. Its (if its the expensive one from West Marine) a water activated strobe light so you can be more easily spotted from a distance of up to 5 miles (again if you get the expensive one). The cheaper models you have to turn on yourself (assuming you are able) and they are only good to 3 miles. Its hard to see someone in the water with waves and wind depending on the color clothes they have on so this isn’t as hair brained as it seems on the surface.

Ahhhhh. This is one of those times that you spring for the deluxe model, unless you are sailing with a bitter enemy….
