chewin’ on a secret

“I didn’t know it was The Rule!” Kid announced out of the blue the other day from the backseat.

“What?”

“No gum! I didn’t know!” she claimed (sounding so innocent). Apparently, there is a No Gum rule at preschool. I didn’t know either, although it makes sense. A crowd of four year olds with gum….imagine the possibilities. Sure, there’s the old gum-in-the-hair trick, but oh, so much more. This rule discovery explains the wad of chewed gum on her backpack strap the other day. She saves for later. It’s the only thing she’ll save.

But she had news for me about her handling of this Rule.

“Well, when the teacher says no gum, then I just don’t chew it when they are looking at me. That way, they don’t know I still have it.”

She’s not yet four. I’m scared.

  1. Ahhh…yes, you should be very, very scared. Because they only learn to get sneakier!

  2. She has a great future in the legal profession. You should be proud.

  3. I can’t wait until she is a teenager. Oh, did you see the google ad on this page. It’s for Bubblicious Bubble gum.

  4. Ah yes…at least at 4 they share their ideas on how to be sneaky. Unfortunately, by the time they have the car keys they have learned how counterproductive that can be.

  5. For sneakiness later, I’d just as soon not know, I think. And pray she has a staff of guardian angels around here.

Now there’s a Stride Gum (what’s that?) google ad. These ads are pathetic. We’re not building much of a college fund at this rate. More like a latte fund.

And Jim, well, not all lawyers are sneaky. (maybe just the really successful ones?) Kid gets all this from DH, ask anyone. I’m not sneaky enough.

  6. Geez, where does she learn THAT???

Yup. You’re going too have fun with that one …

  7. Wonder how she developed such a freedom from fear of authority figures? Successes in her past of outsmarting them, perhaps. Brains, charm, plus guile, OMG! At least at this age she’s open & sincere with Mommy, — as far as you know!!

  8. Found your site from PlainJaneMom’s Go read it. Love the story.
I also like you header, is that a German Wired Hair Pointer?
My dad has three of them. Awesome dogs.

  9. I hope you have a baby monitor safely hidden in her room. You’re going to need it.

  10. I wonder if there is James Bond spyware type monitors that she won’t find or toss about like the rest of the stuff in her room….? A bug! I need a bug!
