It’s that time of year again.
Blueberry picking.
img_3145.jpgThis is a certain joy I did not experience as a child (things to pick in Dallas would include….a top to go with that new skirt, a movie to see after dinner, and the enchilada to go with that tamale). Meanwhile, Kid is all over it, picking, that is, and not just home grown fruits from her nose. As a smaller child, she would ride in the backpack and call out when she saw blackberries while I walked the dog. At one point, even the dog would shove her nose into the blackberry bushes to eat.

Anyway, after our first choice of u-pick blueberry place was closed (typical Bainbridge, huge “Blueberries” banner and not open), we found an alternative on the island and went to picking. Kid immediately noticed her much-preferred blackberries off to the side and set to prying their not yet ripened bodies off the vine. I was waiting for the owner to come out yelling “hey, kid, step awaaaaaay from the blackberries!!”

Meanwhile, I picked enough to make these and then some (Kid cannot keep her fingers off).img_3153.jpg They are a Cooking Light recipe with a little cornmeal. Yum. It called for buttermilk, but I substituted plain yogurt since I had a lot of it and am too lazy to go to the store for one thing, especially with a kid saying, ooooo, how about this? how about that? and this? and this?….. (am I like those Epicurious.com commenters who say “oh, this recipe was great…I just substituted this for that and that for this….and it turned out great! Yeah, great recipe….too bad you didn’t follow it.)

But, truly, my point in all this is to ask what about those worms?? Do you try to get rid of them or do you just eat them? I would not have cared (much) except one bright green lil’ fella popped out right away when I was rinsing them and probably would have crawled up my arm if I let him. He was cute in a get-the-heck-out-of-my-house kind of way.

I wanted blueberries, not a Fear Factor test!

Also, I want more blueberry recipes! Anyone? Anyone?

  • Just eat the worms. Good source of protein and extra flavor.

Blueberry smoothies with yogurt and banana are to die for. Freeze the blueberries and banana before you blend them with the yogurt and you can have a frozen yogurt smoothie, perfect on a hot day.

    Blueberry pancakes are a given.

    Make blueberry syrup, mmmm!!

  • Picking berries at the Corpuz and Suyematsu farms on Bainbridge are among my all-time favorite summer-on-Bainbridge memories. That, and getting as many books from the public library as my hands could hold, finding a cool shadowy corner someplace, and losing myself in other worlds for hours at a time. (Thank you, Encyclopedia Brown!)

  • You wore skirts with no top?

  • Hah, and you thought I wouldn’t follow the trail of muffin crumbs from Scott’s weblog, didn’t you?

Blueberries are not native to my area. Blueberries properly come in a little clear plastic box and are eaten quickly before they go smooshy.

They do not have extra protein worms, cute or otherwise.

My husband has used them in bread pudding, which, while tasty, was a little over-moist. Dried blueberries would be better.

  • I have never picked blueberries. I have picked my fair share of the home grown nose fruit you spoke of though. So far I have yet to find any worms.

    I guess that’s a good thing.

  • I bought blueberry Pop Tarts this week. Does that count for anything?

  • Jim, you obviously grew up so deprived in the area of shopping….

Sherri, welcome! Thanks for sniffing us out over here. I know those packages of berries, also. Are the worms there just long dead or really nonexistent?? I wonder now…..

Ewww, nose worms, Jeff. Maybe that’s what made you sick. That reminds me — what movie was that with the worms boring into brains??

Scott, pop tarts with simulated bluish goo does NOT count (you miss being scratched by thorns, bitten by mosquitoes and spiders, and getting sunburned); although if you eat those while picking your nose simultaneously…..now you’re talkin!
