ready, aim…..

DH had been traveling a lot for work. We girls had missed him. And by “we” I mean our dog, Becca. No, we allllll did, honey. Really.

Pulling into the driveway, the other day Kid and I got excited seeing his car. Ready to lavish him with lots of squeezes, we merrily entered the house chattering away with smiles on our faces. And what do we see?? Was he cooking a special feast for us? No. Was he on grill patrol? No. Was he having a cool cocktail in the ole lazYboy? No. He was priming his pellet gun, heading to the deck with anger boiling in his eyes. I ushered Kid into the quickest distraction AWAY from this latest episode of Bainbridge 911. That’s all I need HER seeing! I can picture it now: mad at a neighbor, she climbs the fence (again) with Daddy’s pellet gun tucked in her Ariel underwear.

Who was DH’s unlucky target? A raccoon that had all the birds in an uproar (and Becca) by heading for the newest birds in a nest. As you may know, DH is a bird fan, even crows, as well as an underdog fan. He recently pointed out to me a baby crow talking to its mom at Waterfront Park waaaaay up in a tree. He didn’t see it; he heard it first.

Animal lover that he is, this violence can only be explained as some kind of redistribution of justice, a la Clint style. Or maybe it’s just protecting the weaker underdog, that is, baby birds? Either way, did he get that bandit in the back yard? Well, I don’t know for sure, but going up against DH’s numerous hunting experiences while growing up in Alaska, that raccoon might have been provided an incentive to leave the area and ramble off with a limp, similar to DH’s since his motorcycle accident….. :)

[P.S., I claim the marital privilege and will not testify against DH!]

  • Oooh…coons are nasty, nasty beasts. They killed some of my chickens. Good for your husband to take up arms for the weaker species!

  • So I noticed a comment on my blog from you(Thanks by the way! I love comments!) and decided to take a look at your blog. Anyway, I’m reading your most recent post and liking what I see when I click on your motorcycle accident link and discover that….holy crap!!! Her favorite movie is also Rear Window! This is a chick with taste.

So I’m sold..no need to read any further. Looking forward to future installments.

  • I’m sure the neighboor hood coon got Philly a couple of years ago. We almost lost him because of a nasty bite. Take em all out DH!! If you need to borrow ammo we’ve got plenty.

  • Somehow I find it amusing that an island full of people who freak out every time a tree is cut (unless, of course, it’s to clear the way for their new McMansion or the new subdivision in which their next home is being built), none of the well-heeled nature-lovers go to bat for raccoons. It’s their island, too. In fact, they were there first. Losing your vegetables — or even the occasional cat — seems like a reasonable price to pay for a little fresh perspective. Maybe if we stopped clear-cutting their habitat to build up Bainbridge beyond reasonable buildout, they’d stop fighting us back so vehemently.

    Not that I’m anti-nature-lover. I’m anti-annoying. :)

  • What I find amusing is people that generalize that we all “freak out”. Sustainable growth is a reality, that is unless you and everyone else stops having children. I’m assuming you haven’t taken it to that level of commitment. And of course the growth should stop now that you bought your place, right? I have friends that are 3rd generation islanders, and according to their perspective we are all part of the problem. The racoon and crow population are sustained by our garbage and outdoor left pet food. Racoons carry disease and crows are destroying the song bird population. Likewise the deer population is out of wack. They are animals, without human logic so they don’t “fight back”. You have been watching too many pet food ads where the animals mouth moves to the words. They are just adventageous predators and we have enriched their environment to allow overpopulation. They may have been here first, but if you use that argument we should all give our homes back to the tribes too. Hm….not to many takers for that one I’m guessing.
