backing the Backyardigans
Hey, Moms! Are your kids watching the Backyardigans on Nick Jr.? I mean, after you have your suzuki violin lessons, homeschooling, basket weaving, fingerpainting, flash card training, Spanish and French coursework, and bread baking, of course! This show is one of the best around, maybe THE best. The music, by Evan Lurie, is the BOMB (as the kids say….or is that over now?)! That guy is a genius! The characters are animal kids and they sing but, man, this time, kid singing is good, really, I swear. Each episode has its own genre of music, too, like country, calypso, reggae. Cool, catchy tunes with songs you might just have to dance to. And that brings me to the choreography! YES! How many animated shows can you say have brilliant choreography?! None, except this one. Funny, sweet (but not saccharin), clever….I can’t rave enough. I love those Backyardigans! I might have to buy their CD’s (not DVD’s!) for the ipod, the car, the house…. And don’t tell anyone, but I almost bought Pablo at the airport in Dallas, too…….

i love it too! My problem is that I love it more than the 4 year old in my house. How sad is that!?!! I can’t even get my kid to watch the kid shows I want to watch.

That is sad! At least my child enjoys thus far…. I hope she does not grow out of it too soon.

[...] After giving a “bravo” to Backyardigans, I thought maybe I should praise an actual grown-up show, too, just in case anyone thinks I ONLY watch kids’ shows. Ha! So, bravo to 30 ROCK, I say!! What got me was the episode guest starring Pee Wee Herman as a sick, twisted foreign prince. I was stunned that NBC was actually broadcasting this show and not some oddball cable channel. It was outrageous! [...]

[...] While we still love the Backyardigans, we (and by we, I mean Kid) have a new favorite show lately — Peep and Quack on TLC. I found it thanks to Tivo (all praise Tivo, so say we all!). I had a little book entitled Peep and Quack when I was a child. We have been reading it and several other little books that my mother actually kept (and could find) for us when we were in Dallas this spring. They are small, creased, paperbacked treasures. Rereading these books is like remembering a dream you once had….it seems familiar but shadowy, like in a fog…..did I dream this….did this actually happen…..? They have a charming formality to their style and were obviously written in a another time, another generation (ok, couple of generations, but don’t be snotty). The collection includes one ironically entitled “Wendy Won’t Eat.” Wendy blows away. Great children’s tale. Not eating has never been an issue for me, ever since. [...]

Yes! Backyardigans, is cool as my five year old says it. From birth (if I can say that) he loves Thomas and friends, but when timewarner cable started showing backyardigans on Nick Jr. he started picking interest and as he turned four and half he is all consumed by the backyardigans. I also like their music but I really love the music of wonder pets.
