a big P in big D

Last month, I wrote a post and received some great commentary relating to a someone’s kid’s need to pee in the park, or a park’s need for bathrooms, depending on how you look at it. We recently learned that Bainbridge Island’s Waterfront Park is not the only park to be lacking in facilities. Right after my Kid and I landed in Dallas, Texas, we were greeted by Grammy and Grandpa at the airport. Being on extra good grandparent behavior, they escorted us directly from the airport to a PARK! Not a bad way to greet your 3 year old grandchild. Extra brownie points. But then, after she befriended a little boy who showed her all the ropes, jungle gym (remember those?), and slide, Kid suddenly had the urge. Guess what? No potties at the park. We were surrounded by street after street of houses. Do we knock on some stranger’s door or head for a tree? We headed for a tree, AWAY from the playset equipment and tried as modestly as possible to relieve her need without embarrassing anyone or getting anyone’s shoes wet. Needless to say, we have quite possibly become the subject of someone else’s rants on their blog about the lack of “decorum” in the out-of-doors. And I have this added question: when you are traveling, are you on “better” behavior as an ambassador from your home or “worse” behavior since you are only visiting and going to have see any of those people again (except for the relatives you may be visiting, of course)?

Note: Interestingly, there is now a guide to the location of bathrooms for visitors, parents and kids to our lovely Bainbridge Island, including ratings of best and worst conditions. It was not created by a mom with a young kid, but a senior citizen, I believe. Bravo!
