a pox on your chicken pox vaccine!

Is anyone else annoyed about this chicken pox vaccine thing?! Turns out, that shot you thought was good for your child, protecting them from suffering through chicken pox and possibly shingles, doesn’t work! Read this. Or, at least on 20% of kids who got it. Now, your kid needs a BOOSTER shot, too. And, no one knows how long that is good for. Meanwhile, you get to worry about your kid getting chicken pox anyway when they are older and having a more severe case than if we had just left it all alone in the first place! WTF?! Oh, but hey, Merck and probably all the others have got a new vaccine for you……

  • you know, i’m not at all anti vaccine but this chix pox thing just never felt right to me. Especially when the Doc couldn’t guarantee she wouldn’t get the chicken pox. Then I started hearing about kids who had been vaccinated getting the chix pox twice in 2 years! we figured we would try and find a chicken pox party when she was five or six years old and get it over with the old fashioned way.

  • You were smart! I was on the fence personally but felt “outside pressures” about it so we got the shot. Now I wish we’d just held out.

  • And much to my chagrin, your not done with this until they are safely tucked away in a dorm room with an arm full of hep B and viral meningitis protection. Both my kids had the pox at an early age and I am glad it worked out that way. An interesting tid bit I found out from my Doc, albeit too late to help the younger one; the length of the exposure can effect the severity of the case. So if the case is too light, they don’t develop imunity and if its severe (as in my toddler getting from older brother) its miserable for all.

  • I, too, caught it from my older brother, but I don’t remember it. Sheri, don’t even start me worrying about dorm rooms!! Yikes!

  • I was in some sort of stupor that “wellness visit” and agreed to the vaccine. I’ve doomed my child to shingles later in life, haven’t I?!!

  • I think they don’t even know if it helps prevent shingles or might make it more likely at this point! The question now is often you are supposed to keep going back for another vaccination. Big pharma = :D
