a very merry unbirthday
My Kid is in preschool and my Kid has an August birthday. Do you know what this means? I did not. This means that she has a 1/2 year birthday party at school. This means she gets to wear a birthday crown there, and they sing to her and eat some kind of special treat at snack time. Sweet, but somehow I missed that memo. As I dropped her off, the teacher, a very nice person, gave me a soooo, uhhhh, is there a special treat in with the normal snack you brought?? Uh, why? I asked. Then she told me about the 1/2 birthday. So off I dash to get something for the treat. And the bakery which usually has tons of cookies with sprinkles and animal shapes with frosting that morning had bupkis, except shortbread cookies, chocolate or vanilla, circles only, no animals, no sprinkles, no icing. Real Special.
I assume it all went fine at school, excluding how Kid frankly informed me later in the car that she did not care for the chocolate cookies. Then came the after party–which involved Kid talking fast, pacing around the living room, waving her hands around, thinking out loud about all she must have for her birthday party, like Katherine Hepburn to Jimmy Stewart. “I’ll have all my friends….and they could wear costumes…and I’ll wear my Nemo costume….and no, I know, I like pajamas, so it could be a pajama party…” Off she trotted down the hall, talking, and returning, talking, wearing pj’s. I discussed again with her how that was a 1/2 birthday party and not a REAL birthday party and how we could pretend to have a party, and she nodded in understanding. Then we had to make a cake. And frosting. She sniffed out paper plates, bowls and cups. Put a little water in fifteen cups, lined them all down the dining table, and prepared for her party. Well, naptime died a quick and painful death last week, so what else ya gonna do?

All I can say is, “LOL!” Just one more memorable “kid-ism.” Wish there had been a video so she’d be able to appreciate herself years from now - - and laugh with us!

1/2 birthday! Christ. Aren’t things hard enough and then you have some “teacher” “helping” out.

And how many times did she ask for a birthday present?

Amazingly enough, her focus seemed to be more on sugar-related gifts, than toy gifts!

No way! Another great example of our society going out of its way to celebrate children doing, well nothing really. (although I’ll never argue with an excuse to make CAKE)
fun to check out your blog… I like the title! Thanks for popping over to mine…

[...] Since Kid had yet another half-birthday party at school recently (But THIS TIME I knew about it ahead of time! Ha ha! Preschool, you can’t get me TWO years in a row! Last year, you saw me run out panicked after drop-off in search of any remotely fresh bakery cookies; this year, Kid and I made CUPCAKES with SPRINKLES ahead of time! Take THAT! (AND could I have a LONGER parenthetical aside??)), her WHOLE birthday is embedded somewhere in every conversation she has. [...]
