They ARE gone a long time, several weeks if not months. I am totally impressed by these families who carry on during that time. I am sure there's champagne and dancing on homecoming days (I was teasing!), but man, those moms should get a night off, too! (at least one!)

I was in the Navy for almost 20 years, so I can remember coming into port more times than I can count, but it all depends on where the ship, or boat, (submarines are mostly referred to as boats), has been, and how long it has been gone. Subs are usually gone for at least 3 months, and most of that is under water, so when they come in there are a lot of wives, and girl friends waiting and watching. There is only room for a few sailors to stand in the top of the sail, and none of the rest can see anything outside. I've heard a lot of stories, but none quite like yours Wendy, and you could be right, in some cases, but no sailor would ever admit it to his buddies. I've always had sympathy for the wives who stayed home with the kids. It's a hard life for them.

Ask Maria if the marines (they are all marines aren't they??) can look out and see the people? Can they plan a meeting of sorts? As in, "I'll be waving on the shore here, see if you can see me".
