A Napless Wonder

I am in mourning (and not just for my favorite hair stylist moving away and Top Chef being over). I loved them so. I miss them so. I looked forward to them everyday. And then, one day last week, naptime was gone. Gone like a ‘59 Cadillac. Poof! What are those phases of grief? I sped past denial and slammed into shock. Okay, Kid is 3 1/2. I am lucky by some standards to get this far. I know. Now, I am trying to instruct her on “quiet time” which means staying in her room and not disassembling her bed, swinging from the shelves or, God help me, performing the “vengeful pee” in the corner. How do other moms do it? The ones I’ve asked have lots of trouble having any kind of quiet time. Thus far, Kid plays in her room initially and then starts silently creeping out, sometimes “in hiding” with a blanket over her, like a little fleece ghost with butterflies on it. Maybe for my own quiet time, I could hide under a blankie?

  • Time to gear up for full-time afternoon preschool. Afternoon being better than morning because they come home tired and hungry (makes for a better dinner hour) and its easier to get them in bed by 8. I’m telling you; 5 blissful afternoons while she cuts, tapes and pastes for three hours would be worth whatever it costs (but it shouldn’t be bad)and she will love you for it once she gets over the first few weeks of jitters. Don’t ask her if she likes it, just tell her its getting her ready to go to school later or some such white lie we all tell our kids so we can survive. Plus it really will help ready her for a sucessful transition to all-day, let me repeat that; all-day kindergarten. Just don’t wait to get on whatever wait lists you need to sign up for to make sure she has at least one full year of 1/2 day preschool and then all-blissful-wonderful-all-day kindergarten. Oh, and don’t let the nasty mommies convience you that you need to volunteer at preschool if its optional. Go get your coffee, nails, massage and whatever else you need to get caffinated, rubbed or polished done guilt free. Only the over-eager-over-achiever-suck-ups fall for that bit. Words of wisdom from someone who survived and escaped the BI mommies group intact but slightly bitter.

  • Good idea! Is boarding school out of the question? Or maybe just a few heavy doses of Benedryl??
