Agate Pass Bridge Closure — what’s in it for you?
I was jolted out of my sugar hangover this morning when I read about the Agate Pass bridge closure scheduled for March 4th through the 29th. To repair damage done by a crane on a truck in April 2006, the bridge will be totally closed from 10pm to 4am for most of March. Although usually at that time of night I am polishing, soldering and generally refurbishing my 1885 brass oil lamps (oh, sorry, that’s my spouse–I’m watching Gilmore Girls reruns), I am sure this closure will serve as an incredible inconvenience to people both on and off the island.
What do you do if you are trying to come home from the late shift? Here are a few ideas (feel free to add to these):
1. Clearwater casino–seems obvious but had to say it; a few martinis, a couple rounds of 21, you’ll forget all about your home, which is good since you may not own it anymore by the time you are done.
2. Go the other way, silly! Drive to Tacoma and back up and take the Seattle ferry (it is still working, don’t let Grey’s Anatomy fool you). If you time it right, you can hit traffic before the Narrows bridge, in Tacoma and in Seattle!
3. Take the scenic route and drive to Kingston, ride to Edmonds, drive to Seattle and then ferry it to B.I. This also gives you the option of driving north after arriving in Edmonds, go to Canada and quit your job.
4. Did I mention the Casino?
5. I heard Poulsbo has a shooting range. Let some of that rage fly!
6. Poulsbo also has a McDonald’s with indoor play area (I heard from others….of course, I personally would never take my kid there….). At midnight, you could have the slides all to yourself and dance on the hamburger head stools.
7. Get a skiff and start your own passenger ferry. Charge big bucks. Discharge waste. Be as noisy as possible.
8. Casino, still open.
9. Take honed shooting skills from #5 and fly off a few rounds at the transportation worker who created this repair schedule (in the air, of course, don’t get postal on me!).
10. Casino. [Hey, wait a minute! Who seems to be benefiting the most from this? This closure decision was made by our government, right??]

Wow. You know that there are going to be several incidents of people (who live on the peninsula) coming home late on the ferry and essentially being completely stuck on the island. I can hear their cursing now.

Oh, yeah! Good thing we got that Best Western now, huh? I think the bridge will be open Friday and Saturday nights, but what does that do to people coming back late on Sundays (like you know they do)?
