uxorious \uk-SOR-ee-us; ug-ZOR-\

adjective: Excessively fond of or submissive to a wife.

Yet another word I have never heard of! I wonder if there is an equivalent for the excessive fondness of a husband. Maybe that was expected in the old days, but this situation required a whole new word? What an oddity? That guy is soooooo into his wife. He must be under her spell! We need a word for that bizarre affliction. And where is the line to make normal devotion into “excessive?”

Also, I assume this is fondness for your wife and not someone else’s…. There were lots of words for the latter long ago (and rocks and stones)!

[P.S., do you think this word-of-the-day service is run by a woman?]

  1. There is the common expression to describe this phenomenon, but it is foul indeed. And to no surprise there is no foul word equivalent to describe a woman feeling this way about her hubby.
