the boys are back in town
Yesterday, we had four deer visit just on the other side of our fence. Here are three of four. Ivy snack time. They all had antlers, so I assume they were boys. I know female caribou have
horns, but I don’t think that applies to deer. They had black tails, too. Are they official “black-tailed deer”? I don’t know. Imagine being categorized by your tail. “Small, perky-tailed human,” “flat, wide-tailed human,” “soft, saggy-tailed human,” just to name a few.

I am tempted to put food out for them, but I am not sure a) what I healthy deer cuisine I have on hand, and b) what the “island rules,” if any, are about that (and c) my spouse would scoff at me, since he has something else in mind with “deer cuisine” — i.e., yes, hon, you go feed them while I reload). I know outside of Austin, Texas there’s a lake town that initially was a weekenders’ town. Then people started commuting from there to Austin. Turned out, weekenders liked and fed deer while fulltimers thought deer were pests. I like them. They are quiet, eat food I’d like to be rid of and leave quickly with a snappy hop. The perfect guest!

A blog posting about deer! You will have all of Bainbridge arguing now. I’ll just throw in the subject of raccoons while I’m at it.

I think it is a great idea that you feed them. That way they are more likely to stay out of my yard without the expensive yellow and black motion detector sprinklers that only work part of the time to keep them off the expensive plants they like to eat right after I’ve had DH (mine, not yours) put them in the ground for me. Yeah, laugh, but I am burdened with a brown thumb and I have a hard enough time getting the $50 overpriced whatever latin named thing I get at Bainbridge Garden to grow. I have a personal theory that B.G. is propigating the deer on the island to ensure we keep coming back for more plants. Just a personal theory mind you so no nasty notes from anyone.

Ah-ha! Conspiracy theory, I love it! That’s what is behind the plant nursery back in the trees, a baby deer nursery!
