canine christmas spirit

All this about kids, spouses and what-not, but what about that gorgeous brown dog, the topic of your title, you ask? What has she been up to? Well, Becca, or Becky-boo, or boo-hoo (when we taunt her), as we call her, has engaged in the Christmas spirit here, too. How do you know? For starters, as long as we have had her, Becca has always grabbed and moaned at any noise-making stuffed toy our child received as a gift. She would hunt it down, nudge it with her nose, pick it up and carry it around, make it squeak and then whimper back. We could hear her from the other room. We could hear her outside. She didn’t usually hurt these items, just nuzzle them and carry them around, like her puppies, DH would say (implying we should not have had her “fixed”). Any singing item was especially intriguing. She really loved the little dog that sang “Who let the dogs out?” (OK, that was really her toy) Now, having cut down a tree and dealt with our guilt about having sap on own hands, we pulled out the tree ornaments, including the singing cow (Deck the Halls sung in moo’s) and the singing dog (Jingle Bells in woof’s). Becca perked up. But knowing her interest, we hung these items on the tree higher than a dog’s nose, but not so high that Kid could not squeeze them to have a song.

Day 1 of tree being up: cow found in bedroom on floor, its guts slightly damp. Cow put even higher on tree.
Day 2: cow found in Becca’s bed, its guts a littler damper and browner.

No other things were off the tree, nothing fallen on the floor. I can only surmise that while we are out, Becca walks on her hind legs and uses her front paws like hands. This would also explain her ability to eat all food stuffs located way back on the kitchen counters, on the stove, or inside my purse. I feel some inner calm, knowing the truth.
